There was a time \u2014 and I swear I\u2019m not making this up \u2014 when the weirdest, most wonderful thing on your radio came out of\u2026 Pasadena.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
KROQ-FM.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It wasn\u2019t polished.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It wasn\u2019t safe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Half the time it sounded like they\u2019d duct-taped the transmitter to a palm tree and said, \u201cEh, we\u2019ll see what happens.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And then\u2014bang\u2014out came Depeche Mode, The Cure, Oingo Boingo, Missing Persons, The Smiths, INXS\u2026 all the misfits, all the outsiders, all the bands your parents thought were going to corrupt the dog.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A huge part of that madness?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Rick Carroll.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Rick didn\u2019t program radio like a consultant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He programmed it like a kid who\u2019d just discovered a secret candy store and refused to tell the grown-ups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He helped build that \u201cRoq of the 80\u2019s\u201d sound \u2014 sharp, rebellious, neon-lit \u2014 and suddenly the rest of the country is calling L.A. asking:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201c\u2026what the hell are you people doing out there?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And right in the middle of it all?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Richard Blade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
That voice. That accent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Like your cool British cousin who shows up at Thanksgiving, steals the stereo, and somehow makes everyone okay with it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Richard wasn\u2019t just playing records \u2014 he was introducing characters. He made the scene feel like a place. A world. A late-night club at the edge of town where everybody wore black and nobody judged you for dancing badly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And woven through all of that \u2014 like a secret back door into the scene \u2014 was Rodney Bingenheimer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Rodney championed bands before anyone else would, slipped them onto the air, and somehow made the weird kids feel seen. If Carroll rewired the system and Blade brought the party, Rodney was the connector \u2014 the guy who whispered, \u201cHey\u2026 listen to this.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And then \u2014 because this was KROQ \u2014 they had to push it further.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Every April 1st, they\u2019d mess with you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Fake announcements. Fake format flips. Wild stories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For a few hours you\u2019d swear the station had been sold, moved, shut down, or turned into polka.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
One year, they even leaned into the joke and did a whole \u201cPirate Radio\u201d day \u2014 like they\u2019d been taken over by hijackers with questionable ethics and great hair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Listeners freaked out. DJs cackled. And somewhere, management probably needed Tums.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It was chaotic. It was juvenile. It was completely unnecessary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And it was perfect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Because KROQ wasn\u2019t about being respectable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It was about reminding you that music was supposed to feel alive \u2014 unpredictable \u2014 like the night might go anywhere if you just kept the dial right where it was.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
So here\u2019s to the Roq.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
To Carroll changing the rules.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
To Blade making the whole thing feel like home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
To Rodney quietly opening the door for the next wave before anyone realized what was happening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
To every April Fools\u2019 prank that made us yell at the radio and then laugh at ourselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And to that glorious stretch of time when a station in Pasadena helped rewired the whole damn decade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
