Pirate Radio KQLZ 100.3 FM

You remember the first time you heard it — that blast of noise, cannons firing, DJs yelling like they’d just taken the station hostage.

And for a second you thought:

“Wait… are they allowed to DO that?”

Welcome to Pirate Radio, 100.3 FM.

Los Angeles. Late 80s. Sunburns, Camaro T-tops, and enough hairspray in the air to thin the ozone by a measurable percentage.

They didn’t whisper.

They didn’t ease into anything.

They KICKED the door down, kicked the cat, and cranked the volume to “sorry, neighbors.”

It wasn’t polite Top 40. It wasn’t adult contemporary. It wasn’t “brought to you by a committee that met in a conference room with muffins.”

This was radio with its boots up on the desk, telling management where they could file the memo.

Scott Shannon and crew built this whole pirate-ship fantasy — big production, goofy theater, swashbuckling bravado — and somehow it worked. Suddenly you’re sitting in traffic on the 405, and there’s Guns N’ Roses, Motley Crüe, Bon Jovi, Def Leppard — blasting out like the city finally remembered it had a pulse.

And here’s the part that makes it even more perfectly weird:

The station was partly owned by Cal Worthington.

Yep — that Cal Worthington.

The used-car king, the commercials, the “dog Spot” who was never actually a dog… the whole glorious circus.

Only in Los Angeles could a rock-and-roll pirate ship be co-captained by the guy who sold you a slightly questionable Buick at 2 a.m. on channel 5.

Was it ridiculous?

Absolutely.

Was it fun?

Oh yeah. Gloriously.

And for a little while, radio felt dangerous again. Not because the FCC was going to storm the transmitter — but because the music sounded ALIVE. Messy. Human. Like somebody behind that mic actually gave a damn.

Then time did what time always does.

Grunge rolled in. Tastes changed. The pirate ship hit quieter waters and eventually docked for good.

But if you were there — if you turned that dial and heard those cannons — you remember how it felt.

Like you’d stumbled onto something you maybe… weren’t supposed to hear.

And man, that was half the magic.

This is Rock of the 80’s signing off for tonight — not sad, exactly… just remembering. And remembering sounds pretty damn good.
